GM Announces New Gas-Powered Cadillac Models for 2027

GM plans new gas-powered Cadillac CT5, XT5 and XT6 models beginning in 2027 while continuing to expand its electric vehicle lineup.
General Motors has announced plans to introduce a new generation of gas-powered Cadillac vehicles, marking an important adjustment to the luxury brand's electrification strategy.
Beginning in spring 2027 and continuing through 2028, Cadillac plans to introduce next-generation vehicles powered by internal combustion engines. The upcoming lineup is expected to include new versions of the Cadillac CT5 sedan, Cadillac XT5 midsize SUV and Cadillac XT6 three-row SUV.
The announcement is especially notable because Cadillac had previously been moving toward an all-electric future. Rather than eliminating gasoline-powered vehicles, Cadillac will now continue developing them alongside its growing electric vehicle lineup.
Which Gas-Powered Cadillac Models Are Returning?
The announcement covers three important Cadillac nameplates:
Cadillac CT5: Cadillac's luxury sport sedan is expected to receive a next-generation gas-powered model. The CT5 has remained popular with drivers who want luxury, technology and performance in a traditional sedan.
Cadillac XT5: The midsize luxury SUV is expected to be redesigned and continue with a gasoline-powered option. The XT5 has long provided a practical combination of passenger space, comfort and manageable size.
Cadillac XT6: Cadillac also plans to bring back the three-row XT6 with a gas-powered drivetrain. Production of the previous XT6 ended after the 2025 model year, making its planned return one of the biggest surprises in the announcement.
Specific details about engines, available trims, pricing and production schedules have not yet been released. More information is expected as Cadillac gets closer to launching the first of these vehicles in 2027.
Is Cadillac Abandoning Electric Vehicles?
No. Cadillac is not walking away from electric vehicles.
The brand has invested heavily in electric models, including the Cadillac LYRIQ, OPTIQ, VISTIQ and Escalade IQ. Those vehicles will remain an important part of Cadillac's lineup.
Instead, GM appears to be adopting a more flexible strategy that gives customers greater freedom to choose the type of vehicle that best fits their needs. Some luxury buyers are ready to make the switch to an EV, while others still prefer the convenience, familiarity and long-distance flexibility of a gasoline-powered vehicle.
Cadillac now plans to serve both groups.
This approach recognizes that vehicle ownership is not the same for everyone. Access to home charging, daily driving distance, travel habits, climate and personal preference can all influence whether an electric or gasoline-powered vehicle is the better choice.
For Michigan drivers, winter temperatures and frequent long-distance travel can be especially important considerations. Some shoppers may appreciate the quiet performance and at-home charging offered by an EV. Others may feel more comfortable with the quick refueling and familiar driving experience of a gas-powered vehicle.
Why Is GM Adjusting Its EV Strategy?
Electric vehicle demand continues to grow, but not as quickly or consistently as the automotive industry once predicted. Automakers must balance long-term investments in electrification with what customers are purchasing today.
GM has adjusted production plans and investments to reflect current market conditions. That includes continuing to develop electric vehicles while also investing in profitable and popular gasoline-powered models.
Cadillac's decision shows that the transition to electric vehicles will likely be gradual rather than immediate. Gas-powered vehicles and EVs are expected to be sold alongside one another for years to come.
For customers, that may be good news. More choices allow buyers to compare performance, operating costs, driving range, charging requirements and ownership preferences before deciding which powertrain makes the most sense.
What Does This Mean for Cadillac Shoppers?
Customers interested in a Cadillac will not be forced into a single powertrain choice. Cadillac's future lineup is expected to include gasoline-powered sedans and SUVs alongside a growing selection of electric luxury vehicles.
The return of the XT6 should be particularly meaningful for families looking for a three-row Cadillac without moving to a fully electric vehicle or stepping up to the larger Escalade. A redesigned XT5 could provide another attractive option for drivers who want a midsize luxury SUV, while the next CT5 should appeal to shoppers who still prefer the handling and styling of a premium sedan.
Because the first new models are not expected until spring 2027, shoppers should remember that availability, equipment and launch timing may change. Cadillac has not yet announced final specifications or pricing.
