Financing is arranged in the store, by the store. Each Jim Riehl's Friendly dealership has its own finance desk that submits your application to multiple lenders — the manufacturer's captive finance company, regional banks and Michigan credit unions — and works the approvals against each other rather than accepting the first offer that comes back.
That matters most in two situations: strong-credit buyers who should be getting a subvented factory rate, and buyers rebuilding credit who need a lender that actually writes their profile. Both are routine here.
Finance, lease, or pay cash
Financing builds equity and ends with ownership; it fits drivers who keep vehicles beyond the loan term or put on high mileage. Leasing lowers the monthly payment for the same vehicle and suits drivers under roughly 12,000 to 15,000 miles a year who want to stay in a newer vehicle continuously. Paying cash avoids interest entirely but sometimes forfeits a manufacturer rebate that is conditional on financing through the captive lender — the payment calculator on each vehicle page helps you see that trade-off before you decide.
What determines your rate and payment
Four inputs drive the monthly number, and only some are in your control on the day of purchase.
- Credit profile — score, payment history, and how long your accounts have been open
- Loan term — longer terms lower the payment and raise total interest paid
- Down payment or trade equity — reduces the financed amount and can improve the approved rate tier
- Vehicle age and mileage — used-vehicle rates typically run above new, and older units cap the available term
Applying and what to bring
Apply at the dealership or start by contacting the store from any vehicle page. A same-day decision is normal during business hours. Bring a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, recent pay stubs or proof of income, proof of residence, and the title or payoff information for a trade.
If you have been turned down elsewhere, tell us up front. Knowing the reason for the decline lets the finance manager route the application to a lender that works that profile instead of collecting another hard inquiry for nothing.
Protection products
Extended service contracts, GAP coverage, tire-and-wheel protection and prepaid maintenance are offered but never required for approval. GAP is worth understanding on low-down-payment loans, where the amount financed can exceed the vehicle's value for the first year or two. Every product is cancellable, and the finance manager will show the price in dollars, not just as a change to the payment.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I get approved with bad credit or no credit history?
- Often, yes. Our finance desks work with lenders who write subprime and first-time-buyer paper. A down payment, proof of stable income, and a co-signer where available all improve the terms you are offered.
- Does applying hurt my credit score?
- A finance application produces a hard inquiry. Multiple auto inquiries within a short shopping window are generally treated as a single event by the major scoring models, so shopping lenders through one dealership submission is usually less damaging than applying separately over several weeks.
- Can I use my own bank or credit union?
- Yes. Bring your approval and we will complete the sale against it. We will also submit to our lender panel so you can compare — if we cannot beat your rate, you keep your original financing.
- How much should I put down?
- There is no fixed requirement on most approvals. Enough down payment or trade equity to cover the first-year depreciation keeps you from being upside down and often moves you into a better rate tier.
