Trade-Ins & Vehicle Appraisals

Jim Riehl's Friendly Automotive appraises and buys vehicles at all six Michigan locations, whether or not you purchase from us, with the appraisal based on live regional auction and retail market data.

Bring your vehicle to any Jim Riehl's Friendly store and we will appraise it while you wait. The number is real money — you can apply it to your next vehicle or take a check and keep driving what you came in with.

Appraisals are built from live wholesale auction results for your year, model, trim and mileage in the Michigan market, then adjusted for condition, history and current retail demand. We will show you the data behind the number.

How the appraisal is calculated

Every appraisal starts with recent regional auction transactions for comparable vehicles, because that is the price at which we could replace or resell your car. From there the manager adjusts for the specifics of your unit.

  • Mileage relative to the roughly 12,000 miles per year benchmark
  • Mechanical condition, tire life, brake life and any open recalls
  • Cosmetic condition — panel damage, paintwork, glass, interior wear
  • History report — accidents, title brands, number of owners, service records
  • Trim, drivetrain and options; four-wheel drive and tow packages hold value well in Michigan
  • Current demand for that model in this market and time of year

The Michigan trade-in tax credit

Michigan reduces the sales tax base on a vehicle purchase by the value of your trade-in, up to the statutory limit in effect at the time of sale. In practice that means a traded vehicle is worth more to you than the same dollar amount received from a private sale, because you also avoid tax on that portion of the purchase price. Your finance manager will show the exact credit applied on your paperwork, and the state adjusts the cap over time, so confirm the current figure at signing.

Getting the strongest number

Small preparation makes a measurable difference on appraisal day, because anything we would have to fix before retailing the vehicle comes out of the offer.

  • Clean the vehicle inside and out and remove personal items
  • Bring both key fobs, the owner's manual and any service records
  • Complete inexpensive maintenance you are already overdue for
  • Bring the title, or your lender's payoff quote if there is a loan
  • Mention recent major repairs — new tires, brakes or a transmission all count in your favor

If you owe more than it is worth

Negative equity is common and manageable. We will pay off your existing loan directly and either roll the shortfall into the new financing where the lender allows it, or structure a lease that absorbs part of it. We will also tell you plainly when the right move is to keep your current vehicle for another year — sometimes waiting out the loan is the better financial answer, and we would rather have the next sale than a bad one now.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to buy a vehicle to sell you mine?
No. We buy vehicles outright at all six locations. Bring the title or your loan payoff information and photo identification, and we can complete the purchase the same day.
How long does an appraisal take?
Usually 20 to 30 minutes, including a short road test and a history report. No appointment is required, though calling ahead means an appraiser is waiting for you.
How long is my offer good for?
Written offers are typically honored for several days or a set mileage allowance, because the wholesale market moves. The exact window is printed on your appraisal.
Can I trade in a leased vehicle?
Yes. We obtain the payoff from your leasing company and, when the vehicle is worth more than the residual, that equity goes toward your next purchase or lease.
